Professor Sara Brown has been elected to join the board of the largest dermatological research society in Europe, the European Society for Dermatological Research (ESDR). Image Photo courtesy of ISID 2023 During an inter-continental dermatology research meeting of the International Societies for Investigative Dermatology (ISID2023) conference in Tokyo, Japan, Sara Brown was elected to join two other representatives for the UK on the ESDR board. Her 5-year term of office will formally commence in September 2023. The ESDR, founded in 1970, is a non-profit organization that supports investigative dermatology and skin research. The ESDR is the largest dermatological research society in Europe with a current membership of about 1100. The society promotes information exchange between clinicians and scientists at its annual scientific meeting, clinical symposia and educational events. The ESDR Board ensures the smooth functioning of the society and performs all duties not reserved to the AGM. These duties include managing scientific programmes and educational events, developing projects through committees and participating in regular virtual or face-to-face meetings. Professor Sara Brown is a clinical academic dermatologist whose research focusses on how genetic factors influence predisposition to the inflammatory skin disease atopic eczema and associated systemic conditions. The Brown Lab uses human skin organoid models to investigate the role of molecular genetic factors in health and disease. The ultimate aim of Professor Brown’s work is to identify targets for the development of new and better treatments for people affected by eczema, dry skin (ichthyoses) and related allergic conditions. I am honoured and delighted to have been selected to serve on the ESDR Board. This ESDR is a society that promotes a high standard of dermatological research and supports the training and development of researchers throughout Europe. I look forward to contributing to the future of this society, particularly through increasing support for researchers in countries under challenging social and economic circumstances as well as developing greater patient and public engagement.
